How did I get here? Well, I had worked as a software developer for over 12 years. I had always been involved in sports playing basketball in high school and college. I would hit the gym 4 to 5 times a week engaging in a weight lifting regime and then capping it off with some cardio. I played in a bunch of basketball leagues and suffered my share of injuries.

In 2008, my military buddy introduced me to CrossFit and I gave it a shot. First off, I immediately realized how unfit I was. Secondly, after I started getting acclimated to it, I watched my basketball abilities sky rocket. I was able to dunk again in my thirties (something I hadn’t done since college), and I was playing entire leagues injury free. In 2010, I was loving CrossFit, and realized it was my calling. I left the office and decided to devote myself to my passion of CrossFit. I love teaching CrossFit and hope to share the many benefits that I have not only experienced, but witnessed in many other individuals.

I began CrossFit in Oakland in November, 2010. After years of hearing bad things about it, I was immediately hooked when I actually tried it. I leaned-up while increasing my strength, I made a lot of new friends, and I had a great time in the process. CrossFit has enhanced my life-long passion for sport, training, helping others, and having fun.

I started doing CrossFit in the summer of 2012. I had been keeping up with my fitness after college by running, doing yoga, and doing some light weight training. But within the first few months of CrossFit, I started seeing dramatic improvements: I did my first real pull-up ever, and achieved a new personal best 1-mile time. I loved the feeling of accomplishment that came with each new milestone, and in the spring of 2013, I earned my CrossFit Level 1 certification so that I could help others train to reach their goals too.

I’m also a proud veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, with 7 years of active duty service. In addition to my Crossfit Level 1 certificate, I have a USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coaching certification, and have taken courses on proper movement patterns with Carl Paoli, and Crossfit training for adaptive athletes through Crossroads Adaptive Athletic Alliance. I’ve been a competitive racing sailor for many years, and was fortunate to participate in the World Military Sailing Championships in 2011 and 2013, where my team won a bronze medal both times.

I’ve been playing hockey since I was nine. Throughout college I felt like I was never strong enough or skated fast enough. Then in 2012 I wanted to step up my game and decided to try CrossFit. I was hooked. I realized that it wasn’t just something I did to be better at hockey, but it was something I was passionate about by itself. I decided to get certified to teach and have been since January, 2015. I really enjoy the tiny details in every movement. Especially in the clean and jerk and the snatch within Olympic weightlifting. If you want any help or any pointers please don’t hesitate to ask! See you around the box!

Nervous to try CrossFit?  So was I. At close to 300 pounds, I joined CrossFit Mariner Square in 2011 and haven’t looked back since. I never thought I would be running 400 meters — let a lone doing pull ups, double-unders, jumping on boxes, and lifting heavy things. CrossFit to me is a community of healthy, fit, fun (and sometimes competitive) friends. CrossFit has empowered me to change my life and I am ecstatic to become part of the coaching team at Mariner Square!

I earned my L1 Certificate on June 29, 2014 and earned my CF Kids Certificate on May 3, 2014.  For my day job, I’m a fourth grade teacher and feel passionate about bringing the joy of fitness and a healthy life to kids!

I started crossfit in 2011 at CrossFit Mariner Square. My Mom introduced me to CrossFit. After joining, I was instantly hooked. The community is a big part of why I love CrossFit and it allows you to be supportive and competitive at the same time. My favorite CrossFit movement is anything that involves a barbell. I currently am focusing on Olympic weightlifting. I have competed at the national level for weightlifting two years in a row. CrossFit and weightlifting are my passion. My goal is to grow as an athlete and coach at the same time.

Mason Snyder

CrossFit Trainer
Social Media Head

.CF Level 1

Prior to CrossFit Mariner Square, Mason’s background consisted of weight training, running, and soccer.  He was introduced to CrossFit by two of his buddies who opened a box in his home state of South Carolina – although he was a bit reluctant to join a box himself because, let’s be honest, CrossFit is and looks tough. Mason and his wife, Andie, moved to the bay area in 2012 and finally decided they wanted to take their fitness to the next level – so they joined CrossFit Mariner Square.

Through weightlifting and his training at CFMS Mason has not only seen significant improvements to his fitness abilities but also in his body’s response to injury. Mason has dealt with lower back pain due mainly to a 2010 injury. Since joining CrossFit he has been able to maintain a healthy, strong, and pain free back.

Mason loves coaching and loves watching the members of CFMS surprise themselves with their athletic capabilities.

In addition to coaching Mason is also in charge of CrossFit Mariner Square’s social media. If you have photos or videos for Facebook or Instagram, please email him at: masondsnyder@gmail.com
